FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

These are some of the most common questions we get and answers to them. If you have other questions please Contact us any time.

  • Where are you located?

We are based in Kennebunkport, but don’t operate a retail store. Instead, we deliver Kayaks, Stand up Paddleboards, and Bikes for rentals and guided tours all around southern Maine. This enables you to paddle in different areas depending on weather, tides, and your personal preferences. There is no charge for the delivery, and our rental rates are generally lower or equal to other outfitters in the area. If you are looking for ideas of where to go kayaking, check out our map with launch sites, or contact us for details and suggestions.

  • I've never been on a kayak or SUP before. Do I need to take a guided tour?

The simple answer is No. A guided tour is a great way to get out on the water, but not a prerequisite for renting a kayak or SUP. Guided tours have the advantage of having a Guide by your side to offer instructional tips, point out wildlife, and tell you about our area. Some people are more comfortable having a guide along the first time they go out, but it’s not a necessity. We offer free instruction before you depart, regardless if it’s a tour or rental, and rentals include a map of the area. We will also point you in the right direction if you have specific things you’d like to see.

  • How do the tides and currents work?

We have a relatively high tide range in Maine, so tides do play a big role in planning your outing. Some areas are completely inaccessible during lower tide stages. Basically we have 2 high and 2 low tides every day. Low tide is about 6 hours before and after high tide. They change every day, so the best way to figure out when they are is by looking at a tide chart. This will show tide times and heights, though in most cases the height is not important. Generally tides are an hour later each day, and repeat themselves every 2 weeks, though that is only an approximation.

Any tidal river or marsh (if it’s connected to the ocean, it’s tidal) will have current flowing in on the incoming tide (from low to high tide) and flowing out on the outgoing tide (from high to low tide). At high and low tide, there is no current at all, and the current is strongest at half tide (half way between high and low tide, or 3 hours before and after low and high tide). When paddling into these areas, it’s best to time your trip so the high tide is halfway through the length of your trip (if the tide is high at noon, and you’re going paddling for 3 hours, leave at 10:30). This means that you will have the incoming tide (current) going with you on the way up river, and then turning and again going with you on the way down river.

If you’re having a hard time figuring this out, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Just give us a call, and we’ll make sure you can take advantage of the best tides.

  • How long is a half day and full day rental?

A half day rental is 3 hours in duration.

Our full day rentals are up to 24 hours in duration. You must have a safe place to keep your rentals over night, or we can pick them up at the end of the day, usually around 5pm, though later times are often available.

  • Why should I book with Kayak Excursions as opposed to another Outfitter?

We could tell you about what a great company we are, but so can anyone else. Check out our Tripadvisor or Google reviews. This is one of the best ways to see unbiased reviews of actual clients' experiences. We are committed to providing you with the best experience possible. We want to make your time with us memorable and hassle-free, which we accomplish by offering free delivery to your location or choice launch site.

  • How old do kids need to be to go kayaking or paddleboarding?

We don’t have any set age restrictions. Generally if a child is old enough to sit relatively still for the length of time you plan to be on the water, they can go. Children under 3 years old usually don’t do well on a kayak, though there are exceptions to this.

We have several different types of kayaks to accommodate children of different ages. For the youngest (under 6) we have kayaks that have a rear facing seat in the front of the kayak, so your child can see you the whole time. They will not be able to paddle from this position though.

We have tandem (2 person) kayaks for bigger kids (ages 5 and up), where they sit in a seat in front of the kayak, but are facing forward so they can paddle too. We also have kids kayaks which are generally appropriate for ages 9 and up, depending on the child. These are just smaller kayaks, so they’re easier for kids to maneuver and control.

  • Do I need to make a reservation?

Yes. Because we are a delivery service, we require reservations so we know when and where you want your rentals delivered. The busier we are, the longer ahead of time you should book. In some cases we can deliver with short notice, but often times we need several hours or more notice, depending on our existing delivery schedule.

  • What should we bring?

We recommend you bring something to drink and sun protection (sunblock, hat). You may also bring a snack and anything else you think you might need.

We recommend wearing light clothing, such as a bathing suit, or shorts and a t-shirt, depending on the weather. On cooler days you might consider bringing a windbreaker or fleece to stay warm. You should avoid denim and heavy cotton, such as jeans and sweatshirts, as these will absorb water and stay wet and heavy.

You may also bring your phone or camera to take pictures and video of your experience. Drybags are available for purchase for your convenience starting at $9.95.
